Scripture You Won't Hear At Mass

Lector:	Today's reading comes from the book of Leviticus, chapter 25, verses 44-46.
Lector:	“‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Gay People and Christianity

            I love it when I point out the shitty side of Christianity and someone inevitably says, “Well, not all Christians believe that, and it’s not what I believe. Jesus taught us to love one another and all those bad parts don’t count anymore. True Christianity is about love.” You know, you’re right. Not all Christians believe those shitty things about gays and women or even slavery (anymore). But they are the majority. They are the representatives of your religion. Throughout its 2,000 year history the Church, the scriptures, and most individual Christians have persecuted homosexuals, subjugated women, and practiced slavery (medieval serfdom was slavery in all but name). For approximately 2,000 years Christianity has been on the wrong side of these issues. And now that there’s a minority of believers who no longer think that these practices are morally good and required by God’s immutable law, people like me are expected to shut up and be respectful of your beliefs because we’ve “offended you”. Gay people, who are routinely told through legislative action and social mores that they are less than human, are asked not to criticize too sharply because we’re hurting  your  feelings. Well, excuse me while I kindly tell you to fuck yourself.

            You think that just because you believe in gay/women’s rights and find slavery abhorrent that you should be free from criticism about your religion. That everyone should be respectful of your silly, and obviously quite harmful, beliefs. But your stock defense, as quoted above, does nothing but give a veneer of respectability to an otherwise loathsome religion. You are engaging in apologetics, trying to make something that you understand to be horrid into something a little easier to swallow. But I ask, why should I, or anyone else, give two shits about your religion in the public forum when the vast majority of your compatriots are taking away our rights and demeaning us? Why should we view your liberal interpretation as the norm when tradition, the scriptures, and the majority of Christians say otherwise? Maybe instead of getting offended you should get pissed. Maybe instead of asking critics to just bend over and take the injustice so that you can remain happily ignorant you should work to fix your church.

            And really, when you think about it, what would Jesus (or any of the prophets) do? Because I’m pretty sure he didn’t sit around with happy platitudes asking people not to criticize his interpretation of Judaism because he didn’t believe the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

The purpose of this document is to issue an official statement of retraction of any and all words that suggest that child abuse is appropriate for any and all types of behaviors including (but not limited to) effeminacy and sexual immorality of all types. I should not have said what I said about “cracking,” “punching,” and particular bias toward outward attraction of girls. Nor should I have used the words “special dispensation.” I did not say that children should be squashed. I have never suggested children or those in the LGBT lifestyle should be beaten, punched, abused (physically or psychologically) in any form or fashion. The gospel is the only source of power sufficient to deliver anyone from the power, penalty, and presence of all forms of sin including, but not limited to, all forms of sexual immorality including homosexuality…

I do not apologize for the manner in which the Word of God articulates sexual immorality, including homosexuality and effeminacy, as a behavior that is an abomination to God. Nothing in this official statement of retraction should be perceived as an apology for the overarching intent and message of the sermon and the need to define marriage as one man and one woman and to maintain the gender distinctions that God created from the beginning when He made them male and female (Genesis 1). I recognize that there are those in the LGBT community who believe that their sexual behavior is not sin. I do not agree with them and this official retraction should not be misunderstood as an apology for the gospel of Jesus Christ or the Word of God.

I do not apologize for the manner in which I emphasized the importance of one man and one woman getting married and staying married for the benefit of their children and society.
